Gauteng will get new licence plates in 2023

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said that new car licence plates would be issued in 2023. During a briefing on Tuesday, December 13th, he was dissecting a number of reports.

NEW LICENCE PLATES FOR GAUTENG

One of the forensic studies commissioned by the Department of Transport dealt with allegations of fraud and maladministration at Gauteng Drivers Licensing Testing Centres (DLTC).

The results are as follows:

Certificates of optometrist fraud
Dumping of fees (Fee dumping is the practise of applicants with arrears who apply for vehicle licence renewal being allowed to proceed and what they owe in arrears is dumped to other accounts, including the accounts of deceased persons).
Examiners, candidates, and driving schools collude
Assets are not proportionate with earnings, according to lifestyle audits.
Service level agreements (SLAs) between Gauteng.

Lesufi stated that the province intends to revamp the entire licencing system and implement harsher procedures.

He emphasised the importance of motor vehicles in combating crimes such as hijacking and robberies, which are frequently conducted using stolen automobiles.

"Either they hijack you using motor cars, or robberies happen with motor vehicles, they utilise them as getaway vehicles. This report is assisting us now to reposition the entire licencing regime” said the Premier.

He confirmed that new licence plates would be introduced as part of the overhaul. These new licence plates will likely have microdots embedded in them. Technology currently used across the country, especially in Gauteng and Cape Town, can scan the microdots to identify a vehicle, per BusinessTech.
